Sad to hear this news about the grave site of the General and his
family. What a shame!

Subject: Gen. Harrington's Gravesite
Hi Mike!
Hope your turkey day was a nice one! Just got back from Richmond Co.
Yesterday brother and I drove out to the Harrington Cemetery - I was
VERY upset! The place is in shambles!!! Gravestones have been cracked
and pushed over. Vines and weeds growing everywhere! The gravestones
were so covered with algae, etc. that I couldn't read the inscriptions.
The land all around it is owned by a timber company which they have
leased to a hunt club. Most of the time the gate to the little dirt
road that winds down to the cemetery is locked. We were lucky that some
hunters were there and the gate was open yesterday.
When I got home, mom said that a few years ago the historical society
cleaned the site. Yet, any southerner knows that in this part of the
country, on-going work is required or the vines and undergrowth will
take over very quickly. My brother suggested that we go out one weekend
and clean it up - which is only, however, the first step!
Do you think that the southern Harrington's would be willing to donate
like $5 per year so that we can contract with someone to maintain the
site. It is way out in the country. I took some pictures yesterday and
will send you copies so you can see the condition of the site yourself.
Have also thought of putting the idea on the Harrgene or asking for
other suggestions. In another three to five years, I fear, there will
be little left of this historic site.
Yes, will swap you Charles' will info for photo of William Henry
Harrington! Do you want the info on the Cole's or do you already have
it?
Oh, am planning a trip to the Virginia Archives in Richmond in January
(to look up info on Charles Harrington, etc. and other relatives).
Anything specific you'd like me to look up for you?
Where in the heck in the archives here in Raleigh are the Gen.'s
papers?! I've asked about them and get dumb stares!!! I DO go to the
archives quite frequently - but DO also have a demanding job. Doin' the
best I can....
Oh, regarding the Harrington letter, when do you think you'll get those
in the mail????
Will email you again later tonight - got some questions that I have to
look over first - not sure of what question to ask .
