I completed high school there in 1950 and went to work at 1 CONC Delco-Remy on the starter assembly line. After about 1 1/2 years I 1 CONC decided that factory labor was not for me , so I quit and joined the Air 1 CONC Force. 1 CONT After Basic training I tested for and received training as a jet aircraft 1 CONC mechanic. Most of this training was on fighter aircraft at Amarillo AFB, 1 CONC Texas. Afterwards I was stationed at Chandler AFB, Tempe, AZ and Foster 1 CONC AFB, Victoria, TX working on the pilot training jet aircraft for about 1 CONC two years. Then I asked for duty overseas and was sent to Frankfurt, 1 CONC Germany and then to Tripoli, Libya. At that time we has a large SAC 1 CONC bomber base there and our fighters flew support for them plus NATO 1 CONC support duties. I was discharged as a Staff Sgt. at the end of my 4 year 1 CONC enlistment and returned home to Anderson to restart my civilian life. 1 CONC After several false starts, my Uncle Pat O'Mara (a druggist in Marion, 1 CONC IN) suggested that Engineers were always in demand and that it would be 1 CONC 'smart' to make use of the GI Bill money to go to college. With this in 1 CONC mind, I finally choose to enroll for the 1956 Summer Quarter at Tri State 1 CONC College in Angola. IN. I was in the Mechanical Engineering Dept. and 1 CONC found that it was going to be a real struggle! However, most of my 1 CONC classmates were ex-GIs so we struggled, studied and played together. 1 CONC Also, by going to Summer sessions, I was able to graduate in the Fall of 1 CONC 1958 with a BSME. Now I was on my way!! 1 CONT A company named Cummins Engine Co. had interviewed me earlier and made me 1 CONC an offer to start as a Test Engineer at their plant in Columbus, 1 CONC Indiana. I accepted and started work for them on Sept. 16, 1958. 1 CONC Meanwhile, on weekends and vacation, I dated a girl, Shirley Wilson, that 1 CONC I met while in college. We fell in love and got married on July 7, 1959 1 CONC at St. Rose Of Lima Church in Syracuse, NY. We were married there 1 CONC because her sister, Nancy, lived there and she was a great organizer; 1 CONC also, her folks were from Westboro, Mass. and it seemed like a 1 CONC centralized place to have the wedding. After the honeymoon in the White 1 CONC Mts. of New Hampshire we returned to Columbus and in due time bought our 1 CONC 1st home. On April 29, 1961 our 1st son was born with due fanfare and 1 CONC was named Michael Shawn. He was a real cutie, heavily photographed and 1 CONC cuddled by both sets of Grandparents! Later that year, Shirley started 1 CONC having health problems that were eventually diagnosed as cancer. We 1 CONC worked hard to stop the disease but it proved to be in vain; God took her 1 CONC to heaven on Nov. 22, 1963. Later my Mother closed her home in Anderson 1 CONC and moved here with me in order to take care of baby Mike and I. I don't 1 CONC think she was ever impressed with my cooking abilities!? 1 CONT 1 CONT Meanwhile, my work at Cummins remained challenging and I progressed up 1 CONC the advancement ladder. About 2 years later, with the encouragement of 1 CONC Shirley's folks, our Parish Priest and my Mom, I started dating again and 1 CONC joined a Young Catholic Singles group. We went to a lot of neat places, 1 CONC dances and parties and generally had a good time. It was in this setting 1 CONC that I met and started to date a tall, slender girl named Mary 1 CONC Wietlisbach. She came from a large farm family that lives near 1 CONC Batesville, Ind., about 40 miles East of here. In due time I came to the 1 CONC realization that she and I were meant to be; so I proposed to her! After 1 CONC the shock, she said "Well....Yes!" And so we were married on a very 1 CONC windy April 22, 1967 in St. Louis Catholic Church in Batesville, Ind. 1 CONC After a magnificent Swiss-German reception, dinner and dance we headed 1 CONC for our honeymoon in the Smoky Mountains. 1 CONT 1 CONT Back home again in Columbus we started the learning experience of being a 1 CONC new bride, having a 6 year old son spoiled from too much Grand motherly 1 CONC love, and a lot of unspoken concerns. In spite of it all, our love 1 CONC prospered and on April 7, 1968 Mary gave birth to her firstborn; a boy 1 CONC which we named Kevin Carl. He was cute too and had the great good 1 CONC fortune to have 3 sets of grandparents to cuddle and photograph him! Time 1 CONC marched right along until Aug. 25, 1970 when our 1st and only baby girl 1 CONC was born; this lovely cutey was named Kathleen Marie. She too was duly 1 CONC held, hugged and photoed by all concerned. By this time Mary and I knew 1 CONC that we were rapidly outgrowing our small 3 bedroom home. We started 1 CONC looking at other houses , lots, etc. all over a three county area without 1 CONC too much success. Then one day we looked at a 3-acre lot that a friend 1 CONC had for sale; something clicked and we bought it. Then we looked at many 1 CONC house plans, talked to several builders and finally got both selected. 1 CONC On March 25, 1971 we broke ground on the basement and on July 14th we 1 CONC moved into the semi-finished house. Now the fun really began; finishing 1 CONC the bedroom cores, paneling and plumbing the family room & lower bath, 1 CONC landscaping, seeding, etc. Then as if to christen our new home, our 4th 1 CONC child was born on Feb. 10, 1972; my 40th birthday! This great birthday 1 CONC present was a lovely boy baby which we named Timothy Joseph. He too was 1 CONC much cuddled and photoed! 1 CONT 1 CONT Back at Cummins, I was promoted to Supervisor of an Engine Test Support 1 CONC Group in 1972 and then in 1975 was promoted to Manager-R&E 1 CONC Test/Machining/Purchasing Support. This covered a lot of diverse people 1 CONC and offered many opportunities and challenges as our management policies 1 CONC changed to meet the perceived import threats. Basically, this involved 1 CONC doing more with less people as we laid off and/or terminated many. Then, 1 CONC on May 5, 1980 I suffered a heart attack while at work. Thank God that 1 CONC the people who first found me were trained in CPR; Between them and the 1 CONC Fire Emergency EMT's they worked a long time before my ticker would 1 CONC sustain a beat rhythm. A week or so later I 'woke up' to the reality of 1 CONC being in the coronary care unit at the local hospital; I had missed the 1 CONC whole thing! Up to that time I had been a heavy cigar smoker (6-8/day) 1 CONC but Mary and the nurses decided that it was time for me to quit; so they 1 CONC refused to get me any and by the time I was released the big urge was 1 CONC gone and never returned. Our hospital had a good cardiac rehab program 1 CONC of monitored exercise; I went through it and then bought my own bike to 1 CONC ride daily. I returned to work after about 3 months but continued to 1 CONC have chest pains until I decided to get out of management and go back to 1 CONC doing Engineering. The company helped me transfer into the Engine 1 CONC Applications Group. This was much better and involved helping various 1 CONC customers get their engine specs setup correctly. I remained there until 1 CONC mid 1985 when I was asked to consider taking early retirement with a 1 CONC bonus. This offering was made to all people over age 50 with more than 1 CONC 25 years seniority. After the initial shock, I decided that the offer 1 CONC was too good to refuse and so I accepted. Thus, on Aug. 1, 1985 I was 1 CONC officially retired! Mary and I had decided that we didn't wish to leave 1 CONC this area because we liked the community, our families were nearby and 1 CONC our home was almost paid off. So I started looking at other job 1 CONC possibilities in the area; as luck would have it, I got hired as a 1 CONC salesman at our large True Value Hardware Store on a part time basis. 1 CONC Also, Cummins now wanted to hire me as a Consultant doing computer data 1 CONC analysis. This too was on a part time basis and worked out well. 1 CONT My Mother had moved her home to Columbus after I remarried and thus 1 CONC became our primary baby-sitter during the kids early years. But in 1984 1 CONC she was diagnosed as having cancer; she too fought the problem medically 1 CONC but with only marginal success. She finally came to live with us during 1 CONC the winter of 1985 till God called her to Him on May 11, 1986. 1 CONT And that just about brings us to the current time. 1 CONT Mary is as tall and lovely as ever. She keeps busy being my chief 1 CONC dietitian, running our 3 acre 'farm' and being involved with the needs 1 CONC and activities of our kids. 1 CONT Our oldest child, Michael, graduated from the University of Evansville in 1 CONC 1983 with a Degree in Fine Arts. He works for Kliegl Bros. in New York 1 CONC City, marketing their theatrical lighting systems. Much free time is 1 CONC spent working on set design and lighting at 'off Broadway' theaters. 1 CONT Our second son, Kevin, was active in Scouting and became the first Eagle 1 CONC Scout in our Troop 555. He is in his 2nd year at Purdue University in 1 CONC the School of Science. He too has found that it is a real struggle but I 1 CONC have lots of confidence in him. 1 CONT Third is Kathleen; she is a Senior in East High School, sings in their 1 CONC Concert Choir and sings in our St. Columba Church Choir. She plans to go 1 CONC to Purdue for her degree in Nursing. 1 CONT } Last but far from least is Tim. He is a Sophomore in East High 1 CONC School, is active in Scouting and is very interested in the field of 1 CONC science. He too plans to go to Purdue. 1 CONT I still have both part time jobs and enjoy the freedom of being 1 CONC independent. I am active in Scouting plus I am librarian of a local 1 CONC Atari Computer Users Group. 1 CONT Well, like all good things this trek has to come to its end. I have 1 CONC enjoyed the memories it evoked; almost as much as I have enjoyed becoming 1 CONC re-acquainted with my Father and meeting Dot and Cousin Edith and her 1 CONC lovely family. I sincerely hope that you have enjoyed this missive and 1 CONC that sometime in the near future we too may meet and get to know one 1 CONC another on a more personal basis. 1 CONT With all our love and good wishes for 1988, 1 CONT 1 CONT Carl Eddy 1 CONT ************************************************************************** 1 CONC ********** 1 CONT Update of Above Info Spring 1996 1 CONT Mary is still as lovely as ever and is now 60 years young. She continues 1 CONC to keep me on the good health path with low fat & low cholesterol cooking 1 CONC as well as my mainstay during the rough times before, during and after my 1 CONC open heart surgery. 1 CONT Michael married a lovely Irish lass named Kathleen Marie Burke who shares 1 CONC his love of the arts and theater. They now live near Madison, WI in the 1 CONC town of Waunakee where he plies his trade in lighting and control systems 1 CONC and Kathy teaches drama at a local high school. 1 CONT Kevin switched his field of study to Landscape Architecture and found it 1 CONC to be a much better match. He did quite well and spent a year in Bath, 1 CONC England doing a work-study period. He graduated from Purdue in 1993 with 1 CONC a BSLA and is now working for an architectural firm in Tucson, AZ.. 1 CONT Kathleen determined that nursing was not for her after a lot of blood, 1 CONC sweat & tears during her first two years at college. She laid out for a 1 CONC while to work with the career councilors and to rethink her goals. When 1 CONC she reentered Purdue she went into the Forestry Department and has been 1 CONC very successful ever since. In 1995 she did the required Forestry Spring 1 CONC Camp in Upper Michigan and loved the experience. Later this year she 1 CONC will be going to Equador, S. America on a 3-week work-study trip 1 CONC sponsored through Purdue. 1 CONT Timothy graduated from East High School with honors in 1990 and also 1 CONC received his Eagle Scout advancement from Troop 555 in 1990. He then 1 CONC entered Purdue in the Engineering Dept. and truly began a four year 1 CONC period of little but work and study until he graduated in 1994 with his 1 CONC BSME degree. His strength is in Design and in using the cad 'ProE' 1 CONC system. He is currently working for J.I. Case Design Group and lives in 1 CONC Downers Grove, IL. 1 CONT Now its my turn! I continued my part time consultant work for Cummins 1 CONC until 1992 when the various Gov't Research contracts were terminated. 1 CONC Meanwhile I continued working at True Value Hardware, gradually expanding 1 CONC my hardware knowledge and sales abilities. Also in 1992 Mary & I 1 CONC traveled to Bath, England to visit son Kevin and then we three took a 1 CONC driving trip through Ireland; both journeys were a lot of fun and well 1 CONC worth the effort. But now comes the really exciting part of my tale; 1 CONC remember that I had a heart attack in 1980 but with medicines and 1 CONC exercise I had no further problems until last November. Then I started 1 CONC noticing some minor chest pain and/or left side weakness; finally, in 1 CONC January I went in for my annual physical and discussed it with my 1 CONC doctor. He then quickly set me up for a cardiolite treadmill which lead 1 CONC to the Cardiologists office which quickly lead to a heart cath. at the 1 CONC local hospital! The result of all this was the very apparent need for 1 CONC open heart surgery to do some (3) bypasses. So on Feb. 21 Mary & I 1 CONC visited the surgeons office where we found out that I really needed 6 1 CONC bypasses, two of which were about 99% blocked! Wow! So on Monday Feb. 1 CONC 26 I entered Methodist Hospital where the team did the 6 bypasses and re 1 CONC stitched me back together; by Wed. Noon I was out of intensive care and 1 CONC in a regular care room. I had plenty of aches & pain but my heart felt 1 CONC good. Then they started walking me to regain strength and by Friday 1 CONC afternoon I was released to go home. 1 CONT End of update - Carl Eddy 0 @I40@ INDI 1 NAME Kathleen Marie /Burke/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 5 Dec 1964 2 PLAC St. Massour Hosp., Oceanside, NY 1 _FA13 2 DATE 1996 2 PLAC Researcher: <*httpsite*/carleddy.html>Carl Eddy 1 FAMS @F07@ 1 NOTE @NI40@ 0 @NI40@ NOTE 1 CONC BFA-Hofstra Univ. 0 @I41@ INDI 1 NAME Gerald Carl /Eddy/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 21 Jun 1907 2 PLAC Mount Etna, IN 1 DEAT 2 DATE 2 Apr 1992 2 PLAC Madison, IN; Buried in Kent Cem., Kent, IN. 1 _FA7 2 PLAC Printer 1 _FA8 2 PLAC Wes.
